Role: This Committee will have delegated powers to undertake its role within the framework of the principles and Terms of Reference set out below.
- To provide a framework which enables the Headteacher to get on with the day to day management of the building.
- To seek to ensure that the building and site provide a safe and healthy environment appropriate to the age range and needs of the children placed in the school.
- To work towards the provision of an appropriate working environment for staff and the outside agencies working with the school (including parents).
- To support the development of an appropriate environment to enable the school to deliver the required curriculum and enrich the range of learning opportunities.
Specific Terms of Reference include:
- monitoring the school’s use of energy and encouraging conservation of energy and the efficient use of the school’s financial resources.
- monitoring the maintenance and repair requirements and costs of the building and grounds.
- contribute to the buildings element of the School Improvement Plan and identify priorities for development and funding.
- make recommendation for the enhancement of the quality of the school environment and make related bids to the Finance Committee.
- to interpret and implement the broad policies of the Governing Body as they relate to the buildings and school site including the use of the school building/site outside school hours.
- have a member of the Buildings Committee attend the school’s Health and Safety Committee meetings and monitor the Health and Safety Policy, ensure risk assessments are carried out as required and in line with County Guidance.
Meetings The Buildings Committee should meet at least twice a year.
Brief minutes should be taken at each meeting. These should be passed to the Clerk to be taken forward for consideration/adoption at the next full Governors meeting.
Membership The Committee will consist of four Governors (plus the Headteacher acting in an advisory capacity).
- A member of the school staff can be co-opted onto the Committee but cannot have formal voting powers.
- To be quorate there should be 50% of Appointed Governors at the meeting.
- The Chairperson of Governors and Headteacher have right of attendance at all Committee meetings.
- Membership of the Building Committee should be reviewed at the last full Governors meeting of each academic year.
